Welcome to the world of “free energy”—well, kind of! The Australian Energy Market is moving fast, and with large-scale renewables now playing a major role in our power grid, there are exciting opportunities (and a few challenges) popping up for anyone who wants to make the most out of their energy usage. In this blog, we’ll break down the basics of how energy costs are trending, why battery systems and Electric Vehicles (EVs) can be a game-changer, and how some of our savvy clients are cashing in on the state of the grid. Let’s dive in!
Solar, Wind, and… Negative Energy Prices?
By now, most people have heard about the power of solar panels and wind farms, but they don’t always hear about what happens to the grid on particularly sunny or windy days. Here’s the short version: when we get a sunny or gusty day, it can flood the electricity grid with more power than we actually need. And just like anything else in a supply and demand market, too much supply leads to prices dropping—sometimes to zero, or even into the negative. Yep, there are times when you’re literally getting paid to use electricity. Talk about flipping the script!
This has created a world of opportunity for people to save (or even earn) money by using electricity when it’s cheapest. By leveraging tech solutions and the right battery setups, you can automate your home’s energy use to soak up cheap power during the day and discharge stored power during peak price periods.
Energy Retailers Taking Advantage: Amber and Ovo Energy
In the past, it would have been tough to make use of these fluctuating rates, but there’s a new generation of energy retailers making it much easier.
Companies like Amber are passing wholesale rates straight through to the consumer, so you get 30-minute interval prices as they happen. Smart systems, like the ones we offer, can be programmed to charge batteries during these low-price periods, then use the stored power later when grid prices climb again. Some of our clients have even managed to sell excess electricity back to the grid during peak times for up to $18 per kWh!
Ovo Energy has gone even further, offering free power between 11 am and 2 pm, giving consumers a perfect window to charge up their battery systems at no cost. This means that, if you play your cards right, you could have a fully charged battery every day without paying a cent.
Real-Life Example: Free Power and No Solar Panels? It’s Possible!
Here’s a quick story to show how this all plays out.
One of our clients called looking for a solution for his son’s home. It turns out that the property had too much shade for solar to be effective. So, we set him up with a 20 kWh battery and an 8 kW inverter, designed to charge daily during Ovo’s free power hours.
The son’s home uses around 21 kWh daily, costing about $8.50 each day under current rates. With the new system, he can charge the battery to full capacity during the free period, providing enough energy for his daily use. When you crunch the numbers, that’s around $3100 in annual savings, leading to a payback period of only 4–5 years. Not bad for a setup that doesn’t even rely on rooftop solar!
The Future of Energy Use: EVs and Bidirectional Charging
While home battery systems are already changing the game, there’s a new player entering the field—electric vehicles with bidirectional charging. With these EVs, your car can become part of your energy management setup, charging up when power’s cheap or free, and even feeding energy back into your home during higher-priced times. This approach will open up new ways for people to save money, while also helping to balance the grid and reduce strain during high-demand periods.
Wrapping It Up
The energy landscape in Australia is changing faster than ever, and with a bit of know-how, households can now save on power bills and even create new revenue streams. So, stay tuned to new developments, chat with your installer about smart battery and inverter solutions, and watch out for how EVs might fit into your energy plans. Who knows, you might just find yourself getting paid to use power!
As we continue to support our clients in making the most of these exciting opportunities, we hope you’ll keep spreading the word about smart energy management.
Cheers to saving money, saving energy, and a bright, renewable future!
